Set of stickers from U.S. label Matador Records promoting Liz Phair’s 1993 album Exile in Guyville.

All this week on the blog I’ll be featuring that most shareable of promo items: stickers. And since I was never much one for permanently mucking up a hard surface with something gluey, I’ve accumulated a good stack of unstuck (though not pristine) music-related stickers.

These particular ones came with a Matador store order in 1993, including copies of Liz Phair’s debut album. While the album's subject matter and cover art all scream “cool rocker chick,” the visual style of these stickers is decidedly different. With simple, bold colors and line art of a dashing gent or lady, these artifacts look a bit out of place in Guyville. But I think they’re swell.

Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy Car Seat Headrest is back in more than one sense of the word with Twin Fantasy (again). For those who may not know this album was originally released in 2011 and has since been re-recorded and reimagined for this new release. I’ve seen a lot of skepticism surrounding CSR on twitter and stuff, some people in the world of bandcamp seem to hold a crab-bucket type resentment over his popularity. Others hold a resentment for his recycling of old material which is taken to a new level here. Personally I don’t get many of these criticisms, especially in the age of streaming and digital being the new primary medium. Art and music are plastic and people seem uncomfortable letting go of old systems and structures which were intrinsically tied to their physical medium. I think this type of reinventing is refreshing, why should an artist be bound to a release as soon as it’s released? Why can’t they revisit it and update it? Let’s be honest, this goes beyond a standard reissue and in a way is a rather unique project as few artists go back and tamper with old material, I don’t see this as an attempt to monetize on old recordings (why not do a standard reissue f an already popular album?) but an artist who doesn’t see their own work as sacred and tampers with it continuously (some of these songs having already been re-recorded on Teens of Style). Anyway maybe I’ll sit down and write a more cohesive set of thoughts on this but for now I’m just enjoying getting a nice pressing of an album I’ve come to appreciate in a new way. I honestly think this version is a great improvement and will probably still try to get the 2011 version on RSD. Teenage Fanclub, 1991

A 30th anniversary, or really any time is a good time to remind about one of the best debuts and best albums of the 1990s, Teenage Fanclub’s A Catholic Education. I recently mused on it, and checked in with Matador Records honcho, Gerard Cosloy, about the slackers’ first act for Rock and Roll Globe. Click on the link above.

An addendum: I saw Teenage Fanclub, with Superchunk opening no less, at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, MI, in early 1992, and it remains a favorite show. Both bands were at their early, scraggly zeniths right before long careers of excellent pop. It’s easy to look back and feel like maybe you were at a defining generational show -- this one an alternative rock super gig right before that term became impossibly annoying -- but even at that moment, it felt like, man, you’d better take this al in. 

For me, after about 1992, the helium started seeping out of the post-hardcore, “What do we do next?” college radio scramble as it all got spit-shined into, well, “Alternative Rock.” 

Much of that is of course due to not only my personal musical predilections -- which lean, especially right then, towards digging down for original-era punk nuggets and modern, trashy sons/daughters of -- but the fact that our band, New Bomb Turks, were touring a lot, and having the fortune of being able to play with and see all the wild garage punk bands that were sprouting up everywhere around the world, an amorphous scene I tried to document in my book, We Never Learn. And one that was a LOT more exciting than trying to agree on who sucked more, Candlebox or Collective Soul, or trying to remember the difference between Supergrass and Superdrag.
